A new arrangement with Legendary Entertainment may lead to TV and movie adaptations of Capcom’s Street Fighter. The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Legendary will collaborate with Capcom on projects based on the popular fighting game brand. No more details about the agreement or the potential release date for these projects have been made public as of the time of this writing. The agreement comes at a time when television and film projects like Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Last of Us are giving video game adaptations something of a resurgence.

Legendary adaptation will not be the first one based on the games, as a live-action Street Fighter movie was shown in theaters in 1994, as longtime fans are well aware. The movie came out at a time when Hollywood’s video game adaptations tended to stray far from their original source material, much to the chagrin of gamers. When Street Fighter first came out, it was critically derided, sharing a destiny with the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. It’s only fitting that Mario will get another shot at the big screen later this week, and reviews thus far are generally favorable. Maybe Street Fighter’s next opportunity will be equally successful!
Street Fighter made its arcade debut in 1987. But it wasn’t until the game’s sequel came out in 1991 that the franchise really took off. Several of the most recognizable characters in the genre, including as Chun-Li, Blanka, E. Honda, and series antagonist M, were first presented in Street Fighter II. Bison.
