Users of Steam on PC are being advised by Valve to update their operating systems or risk losing access to the service at the beginning of the following year. The simplicity with which Steam can be accessed across a variety of various PC systems is one of its strongest features. And while individuals who may have updated their PCs seldom over the past five years (for whatever reason) can still use Steam right now, that won’t be the case for very long. The platform for PCs running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 will soon be discontinued, according to a lengthy new notice released on the Steam Support page by Valve. The new policy will take effect on January 1st, 2024, the following year. At this time, PCs still using these outdated Windows versions won’t be able to play games that have been purchased through Steam or make any other purchases from the store.
This change is actually necessary according to Valve. Because essential Steam functionality depends on an embedded version of Google Chrome. Also, according to Valve, this version is no longer supported by previous versions of Windows. “Future iterations of Steam will also need Windows 10 and later versions to access feature and security updates. Although support for Windows 7/8/8.1 won’t cease until 2024, we strongly advise all users to update as soon as possible.”
Nevertheless, this isn’t a great shock, especially considering that Microsoft hasn’t even actively supported Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 in a while. While Windows 8 reached its conclusion in 2016, Windows 7 had its final update back in 2011. Even though Valve could have discontinued supporting the majority of these operating systems years ago without having a significant negative impact on its user base, the end will come in 2023.
