The cinematic debut of Pokemon: Detective Pikachu was almost four years ago. Before the first film had opened in theaters, Legendary Entertainment confirmed a sequel to the film. It was a critical and financial success. Justice Smith, the project’s star, didn’t seem very enthusiastic about it back in 2021. Also, the subsequent few years have sadly seen no new information regarding the endeavor. It appears, though, that Legendary may not be done with the electric mouse detective just yet! A spokeswoman for the firm told Polygon in a statement that the Pokemon Detective Pikachu 2 is still “under active development,” but no more information was given.

Many fans had anticipated that the first live-action Pokemon movie would focus on the main series games or adapt Ash Ketchum’s experiences, but Legendary took a very different approach! Instead, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu made a loose adaptation of a 3DS spin-off game’s plot. Despite the strange choice, the movie directors did a fantastic job of bringing Pokemon to life. The accuracy of the Pokemon in the film won high accolades. Also, the fans have been pleading for a sequel for years.
It’s interesting to note that soon after the movie’s debut, a second Detective Pikachu video game for the Nintendo Switch was unveiled. Tim Goodman’s father is still missing, and the 3DS game ended on a cliffhanger. The Pokemon Company has confirmed that the game’s ending would differ from how Tim’s father is revealed to have been fused with Detective Pikachu in the movie. Ironically, Detective Pikachu 2 for Nintendo Switch information has also become scarce, prompting many fans to believe the game has been canceled. Although no footage or pictures have been made public, the Pokemon Company has claimed that the game is still in development. It would be fantastic to finally see Detective Pikachu sequels in theaters and on the Nintendo Switch. But until we hear anything official, fans should keep their hopes in check.
