Mario Kart is one of the most well-known video game spin-offs of all time. Yet, the series has never specifically stated where these racers are from and how they relate to the Mario game franchise as a whole. Inevitably, The Super Mario Bros Movie had to have a Mario Kart-inspired scenario, and the movie actually offers a brand-new justification for the Karts’ creators and their precise origins. So, right now we know the origin of Mario Karts all thanks to The Super Mario Bros Movie.
The Super Mario Bros Movie told where Mario Karts come from
The Karts that Mario, Peach, and Toad utilize in The Super Mario Bros Movie were made by the Kongs of the Jungle Kingdom. When the Jungle Kingdom initially appears, the Kongs can be seen spending a lot of time racing, drawing inspiration from Donkey Kong’s courses in the Mario Kart series. When Mario, Peach, and Toad travel to the Jungle Kingdom to request assistance from the Kong army against Bowser, Cranky Kong first declines. Cranky Kong doesn’t consent to an alliance until Donkey Kong is defeated by Mario.
In a scene that resembles the Kart selection screen from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Kongs build Karts for our heroes after Mario defeats DK in combat. The choices available to players in that game can be used to create unique Karts for Mario, Peach, and Toad. The Kongs then go on to construct each design in accordance with their decisions. Unfortunately, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe doesn’t actually feature many of the Kart designs seen in the movie. Perhaps Nintendo changes this in the future.
It’s important to note that just because this is The Super Mario Bros Movie’s official explanation for Mario Karts, it doesn’t necessarily follow that Nintendo will do the same in the games. Nintendo has always been sloppy with Mario history and typically only provides the sporadic continuity between game information. Yet, given Diddy Kong’s passion for them, the notion that the Kongs invented these Karts makes a lot of sense; it also explains why Banana Peels are a recurring danger in the series!
